Filipinos in fact still use dual surnames; we mostly use them either in Spanish or in criminal records. And in Tagalog/Filipino, we call middle names the “panggitnang apelyido” or “apelyido ng ina”. Filipinos using a single surname is an American holdover, and while I think it would be good for us to revert to using two surnames it will be a very tall order to do so.

Notice my occasional use of a double-barreled last name for social media.
