I had a lot of flashbacks while walking through downtown Montreal—memories of walking through the streets of Metro Manila. At least the recollections are not colored with sadness this time, thanks to a Spotify-curated playlist blasting in my ears.

Filipinos in fact still use dual surnames; we mostly use them either in Spanish or in criminal records. And in Tagalog/Filipino, we call middle names the “panggitnang apelyido” or “apelyido ng ina”.

Filipinos using a single surname is an American holdover, and while I think it would be good for us to revert to using two surnames it will be a very tall order to do so.

Notice my occasional use of a double-barreled last name for social media.
